“Worm Warriors” examines the issue of intestinal parasites through following the stories of individuals who are working to solve the worm problem. Through these stories we’ll understand its history, current approaches to solving the worm problem, and see why deworming programs are so critical for developing countries.

In Haiti we meet Aaron Jackson, a 27 year-old from Florida who has taken on the cause of deworming. Jackson, who grew up wealthy in Florida, is determined to make a difference — with or without the help of larger aid organizations, or the Haitian government. Jackson and members of his grass-roots organization travel to Haiti and hand out pills to anyone who might be at risk for, or is suffering from the effects of intestinal worms. Jackson’s unorthodox “just do it” approach has won him acclaim from CNN, and support from Hollywood actor Rainn Wilson, who we follow in Haiti with Jackson.

“Worm Warriors” sees Haiti, before and after the 2010 earthquake, presenting a unique challenge to Jackson and other organizations. When we first meet Aaron in November 2009, he is embarking on an ambitious effort to deworm every child in Haiti – over 3 million people. We then return in June 2010 to check on his progress, and to see how the earthquake has affected his efforts. We visit with children and parents once infected with worms, and talk with them about how deworming has changed their lives. We visit rural areas, like the small village of Madame Beaugé, where the water is dirty, and worms are rampant, the people are all but forgotten by both government and aid organizations. Jackson, his partner John Dieubon, and Rainn Wilson distribute deworming pills.

“Worm Warriors” brings the viewer face-to-face with a critical international health issue, one that can be easily treated once the cause and the cure are understood. Through the efforts of individuals such as Jackson and others, we see that deworming does work in many developing countries around the world.

In "Slums of Havana" Award -winning journalist David Adams takes viewers in a journey through the decaying infrastructure of Havana, and the conditions under which many there are forced to live due to a shortage of adequate living spaces.

In “Slums of Havana” Award -winning journalist David Adams takes viewers in a journey through the decaying infrastructure of Havana, and the conditions under which many there are forced to live due to a shortage of adequate housing.

The program examines the reality of life in “Las Piedras,” a squatter community on the eastern outskirts of Havana.
Known locally as ‘Llega y Pon,’ (literally ‘Arrive and Put Down’) these communities are home to thousands of Cubans, mostly poor migrants from cities in the east of the island.

On first look, Las Piedras is like any other shanty town you’d find in Latin America, with electricity stolen from overhead cables and most residents working in the black market. But, despite their illegal status and Cuba’s dire economy, the shanty towns are not excluded from the free social services offered by Cuba’s communist system. Residents receive free education and health care, including doctors’ visits and milk rations for newborns.

And while they patiently wait for improvements in their living conditions, they do so with a smile on their faces.

Among those interviewed is renowned Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez, as well as many of the inhabitants of Las Piedras.

Nearly 60 minutes of video recorded by the FARC guerrillas, with never-before-seen takes, were found in the possession of presumed guerrilla member Adela Pérez, captured in the city of Bogotá on May 30, 2009.

The material, most of which is a ReporteV.com exclusive, consists of fragments of videos in which Jorge Briceño, alias “El Mono Jojoy”, addresses a group of guerrilla members at their camp in the jungles of Colombia. In the first one, released by the Associated Press, “Mono Jojoy” reads an open letter written by Manuel Marulanda Vélez marking the 44th anniversary of the founding of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, and addressed to all commanders, militia members and organizations and movements that sympathize with the guerrilla group. The other videos, released exclusively by Reporte Virtual, the commander makes general comments on the history of the FARC, analyzes the consequences for the guerrilla movement of the deaths of Raúl Reyes and Iván Márquez, evaluates the relations between the governments of Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador in the wake of the Colombian military incursion into Raúl Reyes’ camp in Ecuador and provides a detailed analysis of advances by the Colombian army against the FARC during the five years of the administration of President Uribe.

In other never-before seen clips “Mono Jojoy” reports on the death of Manuel Marulanda Vélez, which occurred on March 26, 2008, and reads various messages between different commanders and guerrilla leaders; he also talks about the situation of the guerrilla movement, defines the reorganization of the military command structure in which Alfonso Cano was named as the replacement for Marulanda Vélez and refers to the overall strategy aimed at keeping secret the guerrilla leader’s death for a while. In other parts of the videos, Mono Jojoy holds indoctrination conferences for the guerrilla members and analyzes the political situation as well as the lack of communication with the different guerrilla fronts.

New evidence linking Venezuela and Ecuador to mutual support with Colombia’s FARC rebels rekindled a year-long diplomatic feud, even as it provided Colombia’s President Uribe with a chance to turn the page on the public discussion regarding military abuse scandals and the shifting of U.S. anti-narcotics bases from Ecuador to Colombia. Despite denials from Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa and Hugo Chavez’s government, seized documents and videos suggests Correa’s 2006 campaign accepted FARC contributions, and Venezuela helped the FARC purchase Swedish rocket-propelled grenades.

On Sunday morning, May 10, 2009, Rodrigo Rosensberg, a successful Guatemalan lawyer, was shot three times in the face as he rode his bicycle near his Guatemala City apartment. The murder would have become another statistic in a country plagued by corruption and impunity, and where Mexican drug cartels exert increasing influence, had it not been for a video Rosenberg recorded 3 days prior to being murdered. In the video, distributed after his death, Rosenberg points fingers from the grave and accuses Guatemala’s president Alvaro Colom, the First Lady Sandra Torres, the president’s private secretary Gustavo Alejos, and Gregorio Valdes, a top campaign fundraiser for president Colom.
